A shoutout to Chants of Sennaar

Introduction
In this post, I shall introduce you to a game I’ve recently played, and I think is worth your attention and time. This will not be a complete, comprehensive review of the said game – only enough to hopefully help you gauge if you might be interested in it as well.
About the game
The game in question (as hinted by the title) is Chants of Sennaar, a game developed by Rundisc and originally published in 2023.
In this game you awake as a mysterious figure, the Traveler, from a sarcophagus. You are then thrust into a strange world, where you will need to learn to understand the languages residents of this world speak – and eventually, discover your true purpose and the truth behind everything.

As you might have guessed by now, it isn’t a simple task. Nothing in this game is written in a script familiar to you. Absolutely nothing. It is entirely up to you to figure out the language, and map it in your virtual notebook.

However, very conveniently for you, this world has plenty of opportunities and clues to do so. Not just puzzles (as briefly shown here), but also people you can talk to and interact with (see trailer for example).
Why I like this game
- It is highly captivating. You constantly make new discoveries about the world, and progressively become more and more able to communicate with its residents. The game encourages you to explore its environment attentively and thoroughly.
- It is flexibly paced. You are (generally) not held to a timer of any sort – you can go as you please, at a pace most suitable to you. The game automatically saves your progress, so you can take a break when you feel like it.
- It isn’t unfair. No guesswork is required – all necessary clues you can find in your surroundings. The game will, at fairly frequent intervals, help you confirm that you are going on the right track.
- That said, sometimes the clues can be rather subtle and almost exceedingly hard to find. However, those moments were, in total, few and far between for me.
- It is beautifully illustrated. The stylized world is very pleasant to look at, and the calm ambient music accentuates this nicely.
Where to buy
Did I catch your interest? Chants of Sennaar is available on Steam and GOG for PC, and on both Sony PS5 and Nintendo Switch. A free demo version is offered as well, so you can try some of the very first areas in the game without paying.
